Joseph Pautler, Sr., was born in Bremmelback, Jurisdiction of Soutlz-s-Forets, Canton Sulz, Alsace, France,on 22 December 1801.

Alsace (Elsass) is an old German province on the east border of France on the west bank of the Rhine River. It was won by the French King Louis XIV in the “Thirty Years War”.

He was born when Napoleon Bonaparte was Master of France, later becoming Emperor in 1804. Because of all the civil unrest during his life he became a very cautious man. Before coming to a new country with all of his family, he first sent his eldest son, Joseph, Jr., on a prospecting mission in 1846. Apparently the report was good because the Pautlers left Europe in 1847 and not a bit too soon, as on 24 February 1848, a mob attacked the Tuileries and in June 1848 the Insurrection began in Paris. Over 10,000 people were killed.

They landed in New York in the fall of 1847. They came on the sailing ship Seville de Grace and the voyage took 32 days. He bought a farm near Williamsville, New York where they lived until they moved to Randolph County, Illinois in the fall of 1856. He once owned a farm on Stahley Road. He was a farmer and a stonemason. He bought a farm south of Evansville, IL, a part of which he later sold for the Pautler School.

Margarethe (who married Nicholas Gross), Joseph, Jr., Paulus and Aloys had already established themselves on farms near Evansville. Bernard, Wendelin and the young children of the second family came with Joseph, Sr. and his then wife, Henrietta. He became a naturalized citizen in Chester, IL on 15 October 1859. He died 16 January 1873 on his farm south of Evansville. His body was later moved to the family plot of his son Paulus in the new St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Joseph first married Margaretha Weckerle who was born in bremmelback, Alsace, France. She died 25 March 1850 near Williamsville, New York, close to Buffalo, and is buried there. After her death, Joseph married in the fall of 1850 Henrietta Dieze, born 1825 in Prussia. She died 6 August 1893 south of Evansville and is buried in the old St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

The Illinois-Michigan Canal was finished and opened in 1848 making it possible to travel by steamboat, as the Pautlers did, from New York on the Great Lakes to Chicago, then through the canal to LaSalle, then on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers to St. Louis. They then went down through Millstadt to Evansville, Travel by steamboat was hazardous. There was the risk of sandbars, snags, fire on the boat and boiler explosions. There were packet boats like the “Queen of the Prairies” which held ninety passengers who slept on small shelves built into the sides of the cabins. They traveled about 5 miles per hour.

When Joseph, Sr., came to Randolph County in the fall of 1856, he was nearly 55 years old. He bought a farm about 2 miles south of Evansville. He bought the 145 and 37/100 acre farm from John M. Thompson for $1,444 by mortgage deed at 10% interest. He paid it off within 9 years.

In 1881 he built a new log house on the farm. He probably cut the trees and hewed the logs himself, his sons, and neighbors. The logs were covered with weatherboard siding and the roof was made of wood shingles. The house is still standing, but has been remodeled and modernized by Raymond Wittenbrink when he owned the place.

In 1868 he sold off 53/100 acres for school purposes. The school house built thereon was known as Pautler school because of its location and because there were so many Pautler children in attendance. The school house was still standing in 1988, but the building and land were sold at public auction to Mike Wittenbrink.

Joseph, Sr., was always a devout member of the Catholic Church and was a staunch democrat. He died on 16 January 1873 leaving Henrietta with three sons still at home. The farm, except for 52 acres, was divided among his 12 living children. Henrietta received the 52 acres she was living on plus her widow’s share of $968 worth of furniture, food, a cow and calf, horse and saddle, and the wheat in the field. There was $179.01 cash left which was divided among the 12 children.

in 32 days, on the sailing vessel "Seville de Grace." His
first settlement was in Erie County, N. Y., near Buffalo,
where he purchased a farm and erected a saw mill, in con-
nection with a partner by the name of H. Weiherle.
On the 25th day of March, 1850, his wife died. In the
fall of the same year he married Miss Henrietta Dieze, a
native of Prussia. They had five children, four boys and

Mr. Johnny Heiman is now in the employ of Mr. Wendelin Pautler. He is an honest, upright young man, and such can get employment at any time.

It was twelve degrees below zero in Clarence on Sunday morning last.

By the new West Shore time card, express train 55, going west, stops in Clarence at 11:08 a.m.

Mr. James Rittersbaugh has returned home from a protracted visit among friends and relatives at Owasso and St. John’s, Mich.

Mr. Jacob Seyfang has returned from an all summer’s tour through the West. Michigan and Nebraska impressed him most favorably. He made 375 miles on a prairie schooner by way of a pleasure trip, and enjoyed himself hugely. He would like to live in the far West if the cyclones would behave reasonably.

The Harris Hill school opened today, with Miss Emma Good, teacher.

The special advantages offered by the Parker Union School, under the management of the principal, E.A. Parks, has increased the attendance to so large an extent that the Board of Education has decided to employ another teacher the ensuing year, making in all four.

Tramps are plenty in Cheektowaga.

Mr. Wendelin Pautler’s shed and flour and feed store in Swormville will be finished this week, and it makes quite an addition to our village.

Erie County has twenty-two race tracks.

A bald eagle killed recently near Santa Rosa, Cal., measured seventy-eight inches from tip to tip of his wings, and his talons, when opened, measured seven and a quarter inches.

From a modest beginning in a struggling colony in our early history, Thanksgiving Day has grown in favor until it has now become a national holiday and is generally observed. It is a good day for doing good.

“There are now six different painless methods of extracting teeth, and every one of them is warranted to make a fellow believe his last hour has come.”

“Mother to daughter: ‘Didn’t I hear Mr. Jenkins kiss you last night when he went away?’ Daughter: ‘Yes, mamma, but it was against my will. Mother: ‘What was?’ Daughter: ‘You hearing it.’”

“Kentucky coroner: ‘Papers found upon the body of the deceased prove that he was Col. Blood.’ Witness: ‘There was also a quart bottle found in his pocket.’ Coroner: ‘Was the bottle empty?’ Witness: ‘No sir, it was full; hadn’t been touched.’ Coroner: ‘Poor fellow. He must have died without a moment’s notice.’”

JOHN DANIELS

In this issue of the Bee we are called upon to chronicle the death of another old and respected resident of Amherst in the person of Mr. John Daniels, aged 78 years, 9 months and 27 days. Death came to Mr. Daniels suddenly Monday night about ten o'clock. He was at Buffalo on that day on his return home in the evening called on Supervisor E. P. Ouchie on legal business. While there he complained of being tired but after resting a short time said he felt better. On reaching home he said he was feeling well as usual and retired a few minutes before ten o'clock. Just after he had retired his little grandson, who sleeps in the next room, heard him groaning, and he called to his father, Mr. Ben J. Daniels, who at once hurried to the room. When he reached there Mr. Daniels was unconscious and took only a few breaths when all was over, death resulting from Heart lesion.

The deceased was born in France and came with his parents, John and Eva Daniels, to Amherst 64 years ago. He has lived in this town continuously since and twelve years ago purchased the farm on which his death occurred of William Hipner. Previously to that he lived on the farm adjoining for many years, and which he sold to Mr. X. Fruehauf. Mr. Daniels was a successful farmer, an up right, industrious man, and a kind and loving husband and father. Mrs. Daniels died about seven years ago.

He leaves to mourn their loss four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Leonard Kiefer, Mrs. George Magrum and Mr. Levi Daniels of Buffalo, Mrs. Joseph Measer of Wilhelm, Mrs. George Klein of Amherst, and Benjamin at home; also three sisters and two brothers, Mr. Levi Daniels of Grass valley, Cal., Mrs. P. Pautler, Evansville, Ind., Mr. H. Daniels, Mrs. D. Wehrle and Mrs. Michael Arbogast, Sr. of this village.

The funeral was held at 10:00 A.M. today in Sts. Peter & Paul's church; Burial in the Cayuga street cemetery. Rev. Father Hillig, S. J., of Canisius College, Buffalo, officiated.

The pallbearers were Messrs. Adam Daigler, Anthony Fix, X. Fruehauf, Michael Miller, Theodore Daigler and George Smith.

Children of Christina Pautler and John Daniel are:

VI. JAMES DAVIDSON
Born: 1788, County Cork, Ireland Died: Monroe County,Alabama.
Married: ELIZABETH "BETSY" DEASON , South Carolina.
Actually, this is child # 3 instead of 6, but he is our line and I have a lot to say about his descendants, so I saved him till last.
James was born in Ireland and was brought to the United States by his parents, John and Jennie (King) Davidson, when he was quite young. He grew up and married in Kershaw Dist, SC. His wife was Betsy, Miss Elizabeth Deason.
James and Betsy had a small farm in South Carolina, but as their family grew, James saw that it wasn't big enough to support them. He hired out his older sons to other planters as they became big enough to work.
Soon after Alabama became a state in 1819, James and his two brothers, John and Hugh, began to talk about going west to find more land. They all sold
out in the Carolinas in the early part of 1820 and taking their families, they migrated on to Alabama. They all found land and settled in Monroe County, Ala.
Hugh died a few years after they moved to the new land, but James and John appear in the 1840 and 1850 census of Monroe County. Hugh's widow is also in the 1840 and 1850 census, living, with her grown, married sons.
All the Davidson's are listed in these years with their name spelled with a 'd'. However, in later years, some of the descendants dropped the 'd' and began to spell the name Davison. Take your choice; it is all the same famiily. James and John both gave their birthplace as Ireland, of course.
James and Betsy Davidson are listed in the 1840 census; James was 52 years old. By the 1850 census, Betsy had died and James, 62 years old, had no wife.
One of James sons, William, married Miss Eliza Daniel in 1844. He had three small children when he died in 1849. His widow, Eliza moved in with old James Davidson, and is found living with him with her three children in the 1850 census.
I talked with Dr. George W. Davidson (Meridian, Ms. dentist) about 1970 when he was nearly 90 years old. He gave me much information on the descendants of James Davidson. Dr. Davidson said that there were ten children; seven sons and three daughters. He said that all came to Lauderdale County, Miss. except two sons that stayed behind with the father. He could not remember which two sons stayed behind. Dr. Davidson died not long after I spoke with him, so I never had a chance to question him further. Later, I wondered if the two that stayed in Alabama were the two that died there as young men, William and James L. Davidson. Also, I later found from records that James of Ireland had four daughters instead of three.
Anyway, according to Dr. Davidson, James Davidson's great grandson, all but two sons left Alabama and scattered out to Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana, and all the daughters married and left the state.
I have not found when James Davidson died.

CHILDREN OF JAMES DAVIDSON

V. CHAPMAN DAVIDSON
Born: 1816,South Carolina Died: Lauderdale Co, Miss.
Married: CAROLINE ANDREWS (b 1821A1), Monroe Co, Ala.
As a young man, Chapman didn't have much money, so he hired out for wages, working as an overseer on a big plantation owned by the Andrews family. The Andrews' had a young daughter, Caroline, and she and Chapman fell in love.
The Andrews' thought that Chapman wasn't good enough for their daughter and discouraged the match by discharging Chapman from their employ. The seperated lovers started writing to each other, using slaves as messengers. Caroline's parents found out and then, bowing to the inevitable, gave their consent for them to get married. They arranged a fine wedding for the young couple at their home. For a wedding gift, the Andrews gave them a married pair of young slaves.
By the time the Civil War came in 1861, Chapman and Caroline were doing well. They had bought a bigger farm in Newton County, Miss. and their slaves had multiplied by 10, so they had good help for their fields.
The war took everything. His house was burned, his slaves freed, Chapman lost his land. He never could get back on his feet. He took squatters rights on public lands in western Lauderdale Co, MIss. and lived in poverty the rest of his life.
Children: (From 1850 Monroe Co,Ala. census and Dr. George W. Davidson)
1. Mary L. Davidson 1839A1-1850A1, eleven years old.
2. Henry Washington Davidson 1842A1- ______ Ms, m. ______
Henry got married, joined the CoiErate Army and went off to fight in the Civil War in 1862. He was captured and placed in a Yankee prison up north. He got pneumonia, called for his wife and little girl in his delirium. The Yankees, thinking that he was dying, felt pity and took up a collection and sent for his wife and child. Suprisingly, he recovered and after the war they had to stay north long enough for him to work and earn their tickets back to Mississippi.
Henry had grown up with slaves to do all the work and never did know how to be a good farmer. He never made a very good living after the war.
Dr. George W. Davidson, a son of Henry, gave this on the Chapman Davidson family. He said that he grew up in a poor family. He fell in love with Allie Wellborn, a daughter of Dr. D.M.Wellborn, when she was teaching school in Collinsville (Lauderdale Co). He wanted to be a dentist and Allie promised to wait for him to get throu ' dental school in Nashville, Tenn. 7-4- took him a long time to finish school as he had to work every summer ______nny his way by '1____ ting the bushes". [This meant that he rode througu the countryside, repairing or pulling teeth of the country folks that didn't get to town much. John Wesley White's older children remember when Dr. Davidson used to come by to fix all the children's teeth that needed it. He had a drill that he took with him in the back of his buggy. It had a foot pedal that he pedaled to make the drill turn. Ouch!]

6

When George finally graduated from dental school he came home to find that Allie had not waited, but had married Dr. Bennett Deason Pace (George's cousin). George was heartbroken and never forgot Allie. He was an old, old man when he was telling me about it and tears still came to his eyes.
Dr. Deason Bennett Pace, who married A,1 lie Wellborn, was a relative of Dr. Davidson. Dr. Pace's mother, Martha Jane Deason, was a neice of Chapman Davison's mother, Betsy(Deason) Davidson. Martha Jane had married James L. Davidson, Betsy's son.. James L. Davidson died, and then Martha Jane married Bennett Rose Pace of Lauderdale Co. Dr. Deason Bennett Pace was their son.... XI. JAMES L. "JIMMY" DAVIDSON
Born: 1828,Monroe County, Ala. Died: 1851(?) Monroe County.
Married: Martha Jane Deason (b.1826), Dec.29,1843,Monroe Co, Ala.
Martha Jane Deason was the neice of Jimmy's mother, Elizabeth Deason Davidson. Martha Jane's younger brother, Edward Deason (b.1821SC)lived next house on one side of her and Jimmy, and Jimmy's brother, Chapman Davidson, lived next house on the other side. So you might say that their small farm was surrounded by family.
Jimmy's only child, a daughter they named Eliza Francis, was born there in 1849. Jimmy was listed in the 1850 census (22 yrs old) but died soon thereafter.
Somehow, the widow, Martha Jane, traveled from Monroe County, Alabama to Lauderdale County, Mississippi with her small child,Eliza. It is possible that she traveled with her brother Edward Deason and his family, although it has not been established that he moved to Mississippi. Or she may have traveled with some of her late husband's folks. But arrive in Lauderdale county she did, where she met Mr. Bennet Rose Pace, a widower who owned a farm about Pi miles west of the home of John Brown, who was married to Jimmy's sister Eliza.
Mrs. Martha Jane Davidson met Bennet R. Pace in Lauderdale County and they were married there on October 8, 1854. They had six children, one of whom was Dr. Deason Bennet Pace, who married Allie Wellborn (see /JV, Chapman Davidson.)
Jimmy s daughter Eliza grew up in the Pace home.
Children:
